Irregular periods after weaning?

I've always been irregular with my periods, even before pregnancy. They would be anywhere from 28 to 36 days. My son is 8 months and I stopped breastfeeding him at 5 months. So far I've had 2 normal periods, right after I stopped nursing I ovulated and got my period, then 33 days later got my next one. and they were a normal flow with average length (5-7days). Here I am now on day 39 and still nothing though I feel like I've been having PMS symptoms on and off for the past week or so. We are REALLY trying to avoid pregnancy right now, testing soon if AF doesn't show up but the anxiety of waiting that it gives might be postponing it even more. I didn't know prior to having this delay and did some research online on other forums as well and read that delays and even missing your periods is actually common after weaning??? Can anyone share their experiences please, would be really helpful! I'm very thankful in advance, FTM here and stressed out by the delay. Thank you!
